On self love and why it’s important

I wasn’t always the confident and well put together woman that I am today. For many years I struggled with my weight (or lack thereof) and hated my thick unruly hair. My teeth looked like the jagged edges of a picket fence and I spent many days and nights wishing that I looked more like my sister who was petite, had long beautiful wavy hair and overall had more refined features. When I was about nine or ten my family and I were at an amusement park and as I proceeded to walk into the ladies bathroom someone had mistaken me for a boy. I was tall for my age, skinny, and my hair was cut into a curly afro because my mother either did not know how to manage it or simply did not want to. I really don’t know, but I remember shrugging the incident off at the time because I didn’t want anyone knowing how much it had hurt me. That event was something that I carried with me for a long time.

My hair and weight are issues that I’ve spent the majority of my life battling.  I’ve experimented with everything from jheri curls to relaxers to keratin treatments to weight gainers to drinking cases of Nutrament, Periactin (pills and in liquid form), even stuffing my face with plates of arroz con gandules. For most of my life I was as skinny as a twig and as flat as a board. I was genetically made up to be a slim woman and instead of embracing it I’d try hiding my slimness by wearing multiple layers of clothes. For the most part that was okay, except when summertime came around and the NYC humidity made it almost unbearable to wear anything let alone 3 or 4 layers of clothes.

For a long time I tried everything to fit into the standard of beauty defined by society and by my family. Those little comments that they think are harmless can in fact become our inner voice and if we are not conscious of it can let it ruin our self-esteem and our lives. In my life, my mother and sister are always the first to let me know if I look too fat or too skinny, if my hair isn’t up to par, or if I’m wearing something that they disapprove of. Even when I’m lounging around at home my sister disapproves of the scarves I wear on my head; or the fact that I really enjoy wearing my husband’s pajamas instead of the typical female nightwear. To her, I should wear something more feminine.  At 37 I’ve learned to silence the negative voices so now when someone disapproves of how I look or what I say I let it roll off my back. I’ve realized that whatever it is about me that bothers them is their issue not mine. It wasn’t always like this and it takes a strong sense of self and self discovery to not allow another person’s perception of us to define us.

It wasn’t until I reached my thirties that I finally started to put on weight. Coincedentally (or not) it was until my thirties that I also finally started to love the skin I was in. When I turned 30 I decided that instead of focusing on those things that I wasn’t happy with I would instead focus on the things that I loved about me. I also decided that I would spend some time thinking about the things I didn’t like and ask myself why I had an issue with those things. Once I did that, I discovered that the things I thought I didn’t like about myself had all been issues that other people had with me. Once I realized that, I began releasing all my self-deprecating thoughts and behaviors. I started slowly loving myself and everything that made me uniquely me. I finally learned how to manage and love my beautiful thick hair and though I was still slim, I also learned to love my body. Once I started loving myself (flaws and all) I started feeling a lot happier and more confident. Now, every day that I awake I give thanks for all of the things that make me uniquely me revelling in the fact that there is no other person in this world like me. I wake up with purpose and with a desire to be my best self. It is what I hope to pass down to my daughter. I want to make sure that her inner voice reminds her of how beautiful she is even if she does look different.

Today I along with relationship expert Sujeiry Gonzalez and meia personality Leticia Reyes had the opportunity to participate on a panel about self-love and being self-first. The most important thing that I believe I said to the students of St. Joseph’s College is that once you compare yourself to others you take away from your own uniqueness and the thing that makes you special. No one ever remembers the person that fits in. It’s the person that stands out that they won’t be able to forget. Embrace your individuality, it’s your trademark.

2014: Year of The FIERCE Woman

tfwlogo

In April of this year with nothing more than an idea and a will to create something where women could come together, network, inspire each other, support and learn from each other, The Power of the FIERCE Woman was born. I did not know if my idea would be successful, but something stirred inside me and I knew that I had to listen to my inner voice. I listened to my heart, followed my passion and began planning my first event not knowing if anyone would attend. As with anyone who does something for the first time, I was afraid of failing. I was afraid that I would give it my all and no one would show. Boy was I wrong. I planned the first event and to my surprise it sold out. What I had set out to do was really happening and it was exciting.

Our first event was The FIERCE Woman Brunch where myself and two other women (Justine Hornedo & Wendy Angulo) hosted more than 50 women for an afternoon of food, drink, and inspiration. We shared with the amazing group of women how to rise above the challenges we all face throughout our lives and come out on top better and more successful than ever by sharing our personal stories. The event was so successful that two months later I hosted another event that focused on setting goals and following through.

With the intimate group of 20 women I showed the women how to identify and break down goals into smaller, manageable goals, set deadlines and execute. They created vision boards to help keep them focused on their goals and finally spoke their dreams into the Universe by sharing with the group some of their goals for the upcoming year. After the event the women left Katalina’s Bar & Grill motivated, inspired, and focused.

Most of the feedback I got from women who attended one of our events was positive and affirming. They commended me for putting together such inspirational events that connected women from all walks of life and appreciated the intimate settings that the events provided. They were able to connect with the speakers and hosts in a way that made them feel comfortable and feel as if they were sitting in their living room with their girlfriends. Their feedback was further proof to me that I was onto something great and knowing that I was helping women transform their lives really made me feel good.

In September, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month I put together an all female Latina Entrepreneurs Panel at Maranello in New York City, which showcased 5 successful Latina Entrepreneurs and they discussed how and why they went into business for themselves. They shared pearls of wisdom with the women in attendance on how to create successful businesses.

As 2014 comes to a close I can’t help but feel excited for what lies ahead for The FIERCE Woman. What I did this year doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface for how far I want to take this organization. I am committed to empowering every woman who comes my way. There is a shift happening among women and little by little I am seeing more and more women lift each other up. That is the movement that I am committed to. So as I bid farewell to 2014 I am grateful for all of her lessons and the opportunities she gave me. She will always be a special year for my because it is they year The FIERCE Woman was born and as I prepare for our 1 Year anniversary in April I promise that it will be fun, exciting, and full of everything that women have come to expect from The FIERCE Woman.

Stay safe and be blessed. Happy New Year.

Qiana Aviles, Business OwnerQiana Aviles is the founder and CEO of Nail Lounge, a shrewd business women whose style, grace, and innovative ideas make her a sought after mentor among entrepreneurs. It’s not every day you walk in to a Nail Salon owned and managed by a Latina. But this particular Nail Salon and this Latina, are like no other. The stylish Latina was born and raised in New York City. While attending Baruch College for Finance, she was plotting her next move.  She founded Nail Lounge to fill a void in the Washington Heights community. “I saw WAHI lacked a quality service nail salon so I wanted to provide that service for the community,” says Qiana. Nail Lounge opened its doors in 2010 with a lounge-like, cool and relaxing atmosphere. The concept of this Bar-Lounge Nail Salon was the first of its kind. Nail Lounge is most popular for their creative custom nail art.

Her 115K Instagram followers and beloved customers can attest to the creativity and artistry that takes place at the Nail Lounge. Many customers and fans wait patiently for the next Instagram or Twitter post to see what the latest design, style, and trends are. Nail Lounge’s reputable service and one of kind Nail Salon has become the go to place for celebrities and musicians. Nail Lounge has been featured on MTV, VH1, Fox News and on numerous blogs.

Nail Lounge’s excellent reputation and popularity fostered the idea to open another nail salon to meet the demands of a growing business—luckily, a location became available next door and she opened Nail Lounge Etc., in October of 2012.

With her own Nail Lacquer “Q & A” which launched October of  2013 and an Italian restaurant “Maranello” scheduled to open April 2014 her plate is full but she continues to take on more projects, hoping to open a Nail Lounge in all major big cities and launch a magazine dedicated to empowering women. Although her schedule is tight, she still finds time to mentor, inspire, motivate and guide so many women that admire her success and big heart! Her affiliations with Morgan Stanley’s Children Hospital and countless women’s support organizations make Ms. Nail Lounge one of the most loving and supportive women today.

Qiana is more than a beautiful face; she has proven how one woman can take small business to big heights while making change in the community for the better. You can find her hosting clothing drives, fundraising for great causes, speaking on panels, providing free nail services to local community organizations and inspiring the many women that come through her businesses. It is her genuine heart, ambition and genuine love for people that make her a rare diamond. For more information on her businesses visit their websites.

Join me September 24, 2014 at Maranello’s as I host the very first Power of the FIERCE Woman Entrepreneurs Forum.

This event is designed to inspire other female entrepreneurs to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams by connecting them with women who have gone into business for themselves and have been successful.

According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Women are pushing themselves out of the shadows today and taking their entrepreneurial talents to the forefront.

Over the last 17 years, women-owned businesses have increased dramatically, with more than 9.1 million women-owned businesses operating in 2014, up from 8.6 million in 2013. This surging-growth pace, which has doubled in three years, has helped to generate nearly $1.5 trillion in revenues for women-owned businesses. Given these statistics it’s no wonder why more women are opting to go into business for themselves.

If you have a talent, gift, idea, or passion that you know is a great business venture and want to capitalize from it, but aren’t sure how to get started then this event is for you. This interactive Q&A panel will connect you with 4 successful female business owners who are willing to answer your questions and share with you how they did it. All proceeds from the FIERCE Woman Entrepreneurs Forum will be donated to Amanda and Chris Bernier who have personally been affected by ALS.

Amanda Bernier’s diagnosis hit only days after she and her husband Chris received joyous, surprising news: They were expecting their first child, their miracle, the baby they’d wished for during years of working side by side as firefighters and emergency medical first responders. Amanda and Chris have learned she has the most aggressive form of the disease.  She has already begun to lose the ability to move her arms and legs and will lose the power to talk, swallow and breathe. Eventually paralysis will set in and then, death.

Within weeks, Amanda’s condition has worsened to the point where she can no longer walk and has lost over fifty percent of her respiratory capacity. She is living as long and strong as she can for the sake of their baby girl. She doesn’t know if she will get to meet her baby face to face. The donations collected will be used to help the Bernier’s off-set some of the costs they have incurred in making their home wheel chair accessible and spacious enough for Amanda to move around in her wheelchair. Her wheelchair does not fit in their bathroom or kitchen. To all who purchase tickets know that your dollars are going towards a great cause.

The Power of the F.I.E.R.C.E Woman Brunch unites F.I.E.R.C.E Women

This past Sunday, April 13, 2014 I held the first Power of the F.I.E.R.C.E Woman Brunch at Katarina’s Bar & Grill in Kew Gardens. From the moment I woke up that morning I knew that the day would be full of beautiful moments and energy. Mother nature, in all her F.I.E.R.C.E-ness cooperated. The weather was perfect. The sun was radiating, a reminder that when we bask in our own light there is no one or nothing that can take away our shine. The sky was a beautiful azzure blue  without a cloud in the sky. The 75 degree temperature was an indication that Spring indeed had arrived. As the Spring weather wrestles its way in this was the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate, re-assess, and re-invent ourselves.

The Spring is often used as a metaphor for new beginnings especially as we begin to transition from the cold and barrenness of the Winter. In Spring the flowers are reborn again and begin to blossom. The birds fly back East and can often be heard in the early hours of the morning singing their songs. It’s rather hard not to notice the beauty and spiritual meaning connected to this season.

Like the birds, we too have our own song to sing, but how many of us are actually brave enough and  fearless enough to sing our song and share it with the rest of the world? Re-connecting with ourselves and our god given gifts was the impetus behind the Power of the F.I.E.R.C.E Woman Brunch. I wanted to not only unite and connect women from all walks of life, but I also wanted to prove to them how powerful they are. By bringing them together I was providing them each an opportunity to network and to create connections with other women that they otherwise would have never had.

We had over 50 F.I.E.R.C.E women in attendance. The venue was packed from front to back and at times was standing room only. The turnout was everything I had envisioned it to be. These ladies showed up and showed out, each one so well put together that just by looking at them you could tell that they indeed embody all that a F.I.E.R.C.E woman is.

Our guest speakers, Justine Hornedo and Wendy Angulo (both successful in their own right) were phenomenal. They each shared with us their own stories of success and despite the many challenges and obstacles they’ve encountered they demonstrated to every woman in attendance that success is inevitable if you believe in yourself and work hard.

As I connected with the women in attendance I saw in each of them a bit of myself. I saw pride. I saw excitement. I saw nervousness.  I saw heartbreak. But most of all I saw hope. Each woman that came to the event came because something propelled them to be there. Even if they didn’t know what the reason was at that moment, they were meant to be there. There are no coincidences. They were meant to hear the message that the brunch was designed to convey. Sometimes we lose hope and when we do the Universe works its magic and puts us right where we need to be at exactly the right time.

To the women who showed up, not only for me but for themselves, I commend you. I commend you for showing up. You took the first step in transforming your life. You have planted the seed to re-inventing yourself. You have put out into the Universe, by your actions, that you are ready to stand and walk in your F.I.E.R.C.E-ness.  You have made the choice, now make a plan and execute it. I look forward to seeing you all again at the next Power of the F.I.E.R.C.E Woman Brunch. Shine on my sisters and stay F.I.E.R.C.E.

Motivational Speaker Justine Hornedo talks to us about the importance of speaking into existence what you want. “If you speak it, it is possible.”

Author & Motivational Speaker Nancy Arroyo Ruffin talks to us about the importance of dreaming BIG.

The Power of the F.I.E.R.C.E Brunch Speaker Bios

Justine HornedoJustine Hornedo, Motivational Speaker:

Justine Hornedo is a modern day renaissance woman, from an exciting career at MTV Networks to cultivating the young minds of our future as a teacher to currently managing two busy health care practices at one of NY’s top health care facilities, she has literally done it all.

Things haven’t always come easy for her though. Growing up on the mean streets of Spanish Harlem, NYC, Justine’s parents were victims of the 1980’s drug epidemic. Her father left at the age of 3 and her mother was murdered when she was 7. Having to endure living with drug-addicted parents, neglect, bouts of homelessness and heartless adults, Justine took what life threw at her and molded each circumstance into positive building blocks. Justine’s motto is “It’s not your circumstances that will make or break you, it’s your decisions.” Justine understands the importance of education and is enrolling herself back into college this spring to complete her bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Justine considers her achievements to be the result of determination, hard work, and a perpetual belief in herself. She strives to instill these same values into her son and all the individuals she comes in contact with.

Her vision is to inspire everyone who has had the odds against them. To assist them in proving to society, and more importantly, themselves, that no matter your circumstances or upbringing, anyone can be successful and fulfilled.

Wendy Angulo

Wendy Angulo, CEO & Founder Wendy Angulo Productions:

Wendy Angulo is a New York City born Latina, raised in Caracas, Venezuela. Armed with a zeal for reading and writing since the age of seven, Wendy re-discovered her love for writing in the summerof 2011 when she attended a spoken word event in Queens, New York. After reading her poetry at various venues throughout New York City Wendy felt the need to bring the arts back to her beloved borough of Queens.

She created Canvas of Words, an art and poetry showcase that debuted in October 2013 to a sold out audience. The success of Canvas of Words motivated her to begin Wendy Angulo Productions, an organization whose goal is to support, encourage, and promote poetry and visual arts in the borough of Queens through collaborative events among established artists and emerging artists.

Through Wendy Angulo Productions she also manages established performance poets and writers such as Erik “Advocate of Wordz Maldonado”, Jamaal St. John, Ngoma Hill, Nancy Arroyo Ruffin, Meriam Rodriguez, Thomas Fucaloro and emerging writer Vanessa Pardo. Wendy continues to scout for new talent and build new connections to perpetuate the arts and strengthen the literary community.
